Alyssa Gourde, SLP-LA

My name is Alyssa Gourde and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist – Licensed Assistant with Quotable Kids. I was born and raised on a farmyard just outside of Grafton, ND. My special education and speech interest started when I was 7 years old on Christmas Eve. This is when I was blessed with a younger brother who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. My family was told that he would never walk, never talk, and need several supports throughout his lifetime. Since then, I have spent endless hours attending speech therapy sessions. I learned early sign language, prompting and modeling techniques without even realizing I had begun my journey to Speech Therapy. Flash forward to the present day and he is a high functioning individual who is able to walk, talk and even drive! He was & still continues to defy all the odds the doctors once told us, and I was able to use the skills I learned from him to become a Speech Teacher!

In May of 2020, I graduated from Minnesota State University – Moorhead with a Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. Prior to transferring to Minnesota State University, I attended Valley City State University for 2 years for special education. During this time, I was able to help begin and organize a campus club called SO (Special Olympics) College VCSU. SO College was created for university students and individuals with intellectual disabilities to form friendships, lasting connections, and create leadership opportunities. I acted as Vice President for one year prior to leaving the college. While at MSUM, I was able to observe many ranges of clients within our campus clinic. This helped me learn hands-on speech techniques and build connections with a variety of individuals. Post-graduation, I was offered the opportunity to complete my fieldwork at Quotable Kids. During this time, I was put into the shoes of what a new client would feel as if they were going to their first speech session, scared. However, upon completion of my 100 hours of fieldwork at Quotable Kids, I learned how welcoming this clinic is. They say if you love your job, you never work a day in your life, this is how I know I choose the right career path. I am excited for this new journey with families and clients.
